Research Interests

My research interests lie in understanding the causes and consequences of life history evolution. These interests include the effects of genetic and environmental variability on population responses.

In my research I use Caenorhabditis species and selection experiments in the laboratory to study life-history evolution. Caenorhabditis species are widely used in research, for instance, to study mechanisms affecting gene expression and their effects on individual’s phenotype.

C. elegans, in particular, is a well established model species in areas such as genetics, developmental biology, reproduction biology or neurology for half a century. This small worm (1mm length) is easy to maintain in the laboratory. It feeds on bacteria and can be grown under controlled conditions over several generations. Not until very recently, it has become obvious of its potential usefulness in epidemiology.

My current project includes setting up a new experimental system to study infection dynamics in microcosms. I am using the nematode C. elegans and bacterial parasites to quantify the dynamics of infection at the individual and population levels, using experiments and mathematical models.
