An Interdisciplinary Research Centre at the University of Cambridge

Biography

I lead a research centre focused on extreme risks, including global catastrophic biological risks.

Research

I have particular interests and expertise in the international governance of biological risks, biotechnologies, biosecurity and genetic resources and the interactions of science and policy in addressing major global challenges. As well as my role in the Centre for the Study of Existential Risk, I'm a Senior Research Associate in the Biosecurity Research Initiative at St Catharine's College.

I participate in international networks concerned with preventing the misuse of biosciences, particularly through action to strengthen the Biological Weapons Convention. This includes contributions to recent work by the InterAcademies Partnership and US National Academies on the security implications of genome editing technology, and governance of dual use research in the life sciences, and earlier work on development of dual use ethics education, led by the Bradford Disarmament Research Centre.
