An Interdisciplinary Research Centre at the University of Cambridge

Cambridge Infectious Diseases is preparing for the new term, and is bringing you three events for your calendars in November.

These are co-organised with other interdisciplinary initiatives within the University of Cambridge, to make the most of our strengths and bring the communities together.

The first event is Safer Environments in the Light of Climate and Infectious Disease, on the 6th November, co-organised with Cambridge Zero.

This will be an afternoon research symposium, aiming to tackle challenges and solutions related to building environments resilient to climate change and infectious diseases. Are there key infrastructures, in urban or rural settings, which can mitigate the risk of ID outbreaks derived from climate phenomena? Is biodiversity loss (or desertification) linked to host shifts/zoonoses in some pathogens, or do infectious diseases contribute to woodland loss? These are some examples of questions that will be discussed during the day.

The second event is entitled Conducting scientific research in in a rapidly changing geopolitical landscape, on the 17th November, co-organised with the Infection and Immunity Theme at the School of Biological Sciences and the Centre for Science and Policy.

The aim of the event is to discuss how the world that scientists work in, especially those working on global health and infectious disease, has been affected by the recent geopolitical climate, and what we can do to best navigate these changes. The event will include overviews from scientists and science policy experts, with discussion sessions planned on how we as scientists have been affected by global change and what we should do moving forward.

The third event is an Early Career Researchers Sandpit, focused on Sensors and Detection Devices for Infectious Diseases. This is happening on the 24th November, organised by Cambridge Infectious Diseases, with the support of Cambridge Centre for Physical Biology.

In the sandpit, we will feature inspirational talks by academic and industry peers, followed by brainstorming sessions in which the ECRs will discuss ideas for projects to be carried out over 1 year. The best project proposal will be awarded with a pump-priming grant of 7,5k.

Below you can find further information about these events. Some of the registration links are not available yet, but will be in the upcoming days.

Do not hesitate to contact Maria Bargues-Ribera (mb2464@cam.ac.uk), the CID manager, for further information.

These events are open to researchers from the University of Cambridge and affiliated research institutes only.
