An Interdisciplinary Research Centre at the University of Cambridge

I am an academic microbiologist by training. Currently I am group leader in the Parasites and Microbes Programme at the Wellcome Sanger Institute where I lead the Respiratory Virus and Microbiome Initiative (RVI). I am also a group leader in the Department of Medicine at the University of Cambridge.

I have a particular interest in the microbiology and microbiota of the upper respiratory tract and with a particular interest in Staphylococcus aureus. A major current focus is on developing methods to enable routine low-cost sequencing of all clinical important respiratory viruses for genomic surveillance. Research in our group combines pathogen sequencing at scale, host genetics, and microbiome analysis along with electronic health records to understand pathogen biology and transmission.
